The Age of Accountability
Within the Christian community there is a lot of talk about an age in which a person becomes accountable to God for accepting or rejecting him. Some believe that it could be around 12 years old because that is when the Jews throw a Bar mitzvah for a son, marking the time in which he becomes a man. There is no clear age given in the Bible. Nevertheless, there are some verses that might give us a hint of when that age could be. I submit the following verses:
Exd 30:14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the LORD.
Lev 27:3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.
Lev 27:5 And if [it be] from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.
Num 1:3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in
Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
Num 14:29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
Num 32:11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
Only The LORD determines when a person is truly accountable to Him and at which age they are mature enough to make the decision to follow Christ or reject Him. My hope for the younger generation is that the age of accountability is older rather than younger.
